Empathy: The ability to truly understand or share the feelings of another.
When you think of empathy—do you also think of sympathy?
Sympathy: Feeling pity for another.
The biggest difference between the two is feeling sorry for someone vs. actually understanding how they feel & putting yourself in their shoes.
As you can tell from the title, this blog is about empathy. I have always seen empathy as a strength. To be completely honest, I didn’t deeply understand the meaning until I took a class during the hot minute this pineapple decided to get her masters.
I believe that empathy is a strength because it allows you to picture yourself in the shoes of another.
I believe empathy can be a weakness because you can take another’s burden and carry it for yourself.
To truly live a life like a pineapple, it is important to be sweet on the inside. It is important to be kind to others and care about what’s going on in their life.
That doesn’t mean you should make their troubles yours.
Recently I have found myself in situations where I am getting WAY too emotionally involved in the burdens of others. I have allowed myself to listen deeply—which has physically caused me to feel their pain.
If I am being completely honest—it has really impacted me.
I’m at a point now where I love and care for people but I am having to actively try to not emotionally get involved. It isn’t something that will change overnight. I am very much an individual who loves to listen and help when I can, I just need to bring the empathy down a little bit.
The point of this blog is to remind you, and myself, that we can still be sweet, we can still care about others without putting their burdens on our shoulders.
I still see empathy as a strength.
When it starts impacting you mentally, that is when I see it as a weakness & when it is time to actively step away.
